FAQ
Are we insured?
Absolutely! As part of the process of becoming a registered contractor with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) we must provide them proof of insurance and this is verified on a regular basis by ESA for us to continue to be in good standing with them.
Are we registered and in good standing with WSIB?
Yes – clearance certificates are available for contractors who require one.
What is an electrical permit, and when do I need one?
The Electrical Safety Authority is responsible for electrical safety throughout Ontario. In fulfilling this responsibility they have made it mandatory that any new electrical installations have a permit filed with them for inspection (which does include a fee which varies based on the work being performed).
However, there are certain exceptions that do not require a permit, like changing light fixtures, receptacles, switches or repairs etc.
On a larger renovation there are typically 2 Inspections
All permits and inspections will be filed by us so you don’t have to worry about that!
What is the ACP program?
The Approved Contractors Program is a program that ESA offers to electrical contractors that have a history of providing code compliant installations consistently. As part of this program a contractor may schedule an inspection within 24 hours and not have to wait for the inspectors next available time slot (which could be tomorrow or in a week depending on how busy they are) This gives us the advantage of being able to allow the work to move forward without significant delay, as well as peace of mind to the customer that they’ve hired a competent and trustworthy contractor to complete their job.
What should I expect when my house is being rewired/renovated?
Rewiring a house is a big task and requires new wiring to be run between each receptacle, light and switch. We may need to cut some holes in the walls to get wiring to where it needs to go. We do try to keep this to a minimum and plan out the least destructive method for running the wires before we start. There are times when we can access certain portions of the house without having to make holes and there are times when we may have to make holes. This all depends on the location of the devices and the construction of the home.
However at the end of the day, we will do our best to clean up so it still feels like home.
What should I expect when my breaker or fuse panel is being replaced?
We will take care of coordinating with the Local Utility Company and ESA and will schedule whichever date works best for you.
On the day of the panel change we will arrive in the morning around 8 or 9am and the Local Utility Company will arrive sometime around then to disconnect the power. There will be no power until the panel change is complete so brew your coffee as soon as you wake up.
We will call the utility and let them know that power may be restored. When they are available they will reconnect the power.
The whole process usually wraps up between 1 or 4pm.
**Please be advised this is a typical installation and once in a while things may be different due to circumstances beyond our control ie. Utility has an emergency and is delayed or part of the service equipment requires repair**
What forms of payments do you take?
Cash, Cheque, or E-Transfer -details for e-transfer are outlined on your invoice if that is your preferred payment method.
There are so many Electrical Contractors, Why should I use you?
At Ross Electrical Services Inc. we realize that to be a sustainable company we need to make sure that our customers are satisfied with their service from start to finish. So what does that look like in practice?
Well when we come to give you a quote there is no charge for that and we will try to answer any questions you may have and let you know of anything that we notice upon that visit. Later we will send you a quote via email so everything is in writing and everything is out in the open so you know what to expect. You should also know that we will never change our price on a quote we give; any additional extra items added will be discussed with you directly so you will know exactly how much the cost is changing.
We will never cut corners on our installations to bring our price down to win a job. We believe that when we install an electrical system for our customers we want them to have no issues in the future and receive a quality product; you just can’t do this when you cut corners.
Installation: We realize that your home or workplace is important and we will treat it with the utmost respect and care. As we mentioned before we will never cut corners on a job, but we also include additional considerations not thought of by most contractors.
For example, the electrical code allows 12 receptacles or lights to be installed on 1 circuit. We have seen many installations where a homeowner has complained that the lights throughout the home are all on one circuit with the bathroom. There were 12 devices on that circuit so it was a code compliant installation and would pass an inspection with no problems. However, imagine this… one morning the lights are on in the house as they usually are and you are getting ready for work, brush your teeth, get out the hair dryer to do your hair, a couple seconds go by and the lights go out and the hair dryer stops working! This all happened because the circuit your hair dryer was using didn’t have enough power to run the lights at the same time as the hair dryer. So as you can imagine the homeowner was not impressed that they just spent thousands of dollars for a brand new electrical system that is code compliant and they can’t even use a hair dryer!
At Ross Electrical Services we always provide code compliant installations, but we also provide practical life installations to. In the above scenario, if it was a home wired by us the bathroom would have a separate circuit for itself and the best part is, you could do your hair every morning and never have a problem. In situations when selecting an electrical contractor not only do you want a competitive quote but you also want an electrical system and contractor that will give you no issues.
After installation: We value your business and would also like to help you with any jobs in the future. We strive to make sure we have customers who are satisfied with the work they received and make it a very high priority when things don’t work as they should. There have been times where a switch has come defective from the manufacturer and stops working after a couple uses. Not sure if it’s because we are OCD but when these things happen it bothers us just as much as it bothers you so we will get it remedied as soon as possible, you have our word!
